Here is a collection of Bahá'í songs starting with a jubilant a setting of passages from the Naw-Rúz prayer. Next, On That First Day of Ridván, Announced in the Books, and In This Day are settings of Bahá'u'lláh's words appropriate for each of the three Ridván Holy Days, plus there is a benediction that can be used on all those days or any Holy Day honoring Bahá'u'lláh, May Glory from His Presence. A setting of the last two paragraphs of the Prayer for Protection of the Báb, Thy Protection is Unfailing, was chosen for the Declaration of the Báb. The Unseen World Crieth Out is a meditation that will help us ponder the import of Bahá'u'lláh's life at His Ascension observances; however, the words come from the Ridván Tablet, so it could also be used at Ridván. There is a meditative benediction, May the Peace of God, set from The Báb's words to commemorate His Martyrdom, which could also be used on The Báb's other Holy Days. A new version of Is There Any Remover of Difficulties Save God? with a wonderful lightness works well for The Báb's Birthday, while The Best-Beloved is Come will add joy to Bahá'u'lláh's Birthday celebration. Consecration, a setting of words by Shoghi Effendi, is a benediction for the Day of the Covenant. For the Ascension of 'Abdu'l-Bahá, in gratitude for such an incredible life, a setting of both His words and those of Bahá'u'lláh, We Give Thanks to God, also works for Thanksgiving Day for those in the United States and has been sung by the participants at interfaith Thanksgiving services. We even threw in a Christmas bonus, a familiar carol, though based on words of 'Abdu'l-Bahá, May We Dwell Upon the Welfare and quite appropriate to our purposes and to the spirit of the song itself. At last, we have an Ayyám-i-Há Prayer that is both joyful and reverent and expresses the significance of those days and finally, a song for the Fast, Divine Springtime, though this song would also be a fine benediction at the end of a Naw-Rúz or Ridván observance, or for any other fitting occasion. Holy Days should be special, so having songs especially for them helps us create those events that will enable everyone to appreciate the time we live in and the events in Bahá'í history that shaped it. Of course, most of these songs could also be used at other times and events such as Feasts and devotionals. We hope they will be. -Wendy Scott, 2008 |
